Referees play an important role when it comes to any sport. The team and their players make the tournament glow but the referees help to keep the decisions fair. Most of the time, we don’t credit the efforts of referees who run along with players all over the park for 90 minutes. Not just run, but also keep a close eye on the game and spot the finest of pushes to foul the players. It’s not an easy job for sure.
We all know that UEFA Euro was originally scheduled in 2020 but due to pandemic situations across the globe, the tournament was pushed back by a year. Now in 2021, the UEFA is firm on holding football matches. The Euro 2021 will kick off in Rome with Italy hosting Turkey on 11th June 2021.
List of Referees & Assistant Referees For Euro 2021 (Updated)
On Wednesday, 21st April, UEFA announced a list of referees who will officiate matches for Euro. The list includes a list of 19 referees along with their assistant referees.
In 2020, UEFA and CONMEBOL came to an agreement where a CONMEBOL referee team will be included in the list of match officials. In a similar way, a European match official will officiate a group stage match during Copa America. So for 2020 Euros Argentinian referee Fernando Rapallini and his assistants will join the 18 European referees.
While commenting on the Exchange Program, the chief executives of UEFA and CONMEBOL said,
“The exchange of referees with CONMEBOL for our two flagship tournaments will enrich both competitions, and will enhance the experience of top referees. Europe and South America have so much football quality and tradition, including in refereeing. This exchange is a defining part of our cooperation programme, which will help us improve our competitions,” said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin
“Among our permanent objectives at CONMEBOL is making our referees more professional and perfectly trained for the use of technological tools. We are convinced that a cooperation with UEFA in this field will greatly benefit both confederations. This is just the beginning. We will continue working to broaden and strengthen collaboration agreements with our friends at UEFA.” said CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez
