The Belgium football team is not counting on De Bruyne to play the Euro opening match against Russia. This statement was given out by the Belgium team coach Roberto Martinez. Belgium is scheduled to play Russia at St Petersburg on Saturday.
The Manchester City midfielder had suffered an injury during the Champions League final due to which he had to undergo surgery. Even though the surgery might not take De Bruyne’s chance to play at Euro, the midfielder is set to miss the match against Russia.
Kevin de Bruyne joined the team on Monday but was straightway sent for more medical tests. Now, De Bruyne will join the team once the medical team gives a green signal.
On Monday during the press conference, Roberto Martinez said
He will only join up with us in training when the medical staff say so. But I’m not really counting on Kevin to be ready for the first game. He looks ready. He watched our match against Croatia and is already in the mood. He will now build up slowly. But it makes a big difference that he is part of the group.
Hazard Returns for Belgium after 18 Months
While looking at the uncertainty of de Bruyne, Eden Hazard made a return during the match against Croatia. He came as a substitute and played for the remaining eight minutes. Eden Hazard had a season that was mostly missed due to injuries. It was Eden Hazard’s first international match in 18 months.
While commenting on Hazard, Roberto said
It didn’t matter how many minutes Eden played, but that he played. That’s a big step mentally
